Lessons from the Judging Panel

Last weekend brought the results from the PPOC (Professional Photographers of Canada) Alberta Region annual Image Competition, and what a learning experience it was! While my squirrel photo "Where's the Nuts" earned a merit score (cue happy dance 🐿️), several other submissions didn't make the cut. But here's the thing – those "rejections" turned out to be some of the most valuable feedback I've received all year.

Why Impartial Judging is Pure Gold ✨

They See What You Can't

When you've been staring at your own work for hours, you develop creative blindness. An impartial panel brings fresh eyes that catch technical issues, composition weaknesses, or storytelling gaps you've completely missed. They're not invested in your creative process – they only see the final result.

No Sugar-Coating, Just Truth

Friends and family mean well, but "that's nice, dear" doesn't help you grow. Professional judges deliver constructive criticism without the emotional cushioning. It stings initially, but that honest assessment is exactly what pushes you to the next level.

Competition panels judge against professional standards, not just "pretty pictures." They evaluate technical excellence, artistic vision, impact, and presentation – giving you a benchmark for where your work truly stands in the broader photography community.

Technical Excellence Isn't Optional: Those images that didn't make it? Each critique revealed technical aspects I'd overlooked – maybe the focus wasn't tack sharp, or the exposure was slightly off. These details matter at competition level.

Storytelling Beats Pretty: A technically perfect image without emotional impact falls flat. The judges' feedback highlighted which images succeeded in telling a story versus those that were just visually appealing.
